Echo: A Dystopian Science Fiction Novel

I’m the only accounting major, and the faculty breaks me off from the others that are taking a campus tour.  They lead me into a dark, shuttered building.  The head of accounting—bald, bespectacled, no jawline and exactly 1 ng/ml of testosterone—gestures at a seemingly empty room.  “And here’s where our grad students learn.  Would you like to look inside?”  Before I can say no, he shoves me forward.  “GET IN THERE!”  I stumble in, the door shuts behind me, and suddenly I hear what sounds like a million skittering roaches.  I look up; sunlight-deprived grad students are scuttling across the ceiling on all fours, pale and withered, bearing a striking resemblance to Gollum.  Their heads turn completely around and look at me.  Their eyes light sickly yellow as they hiss, then they’re dropping from the ceiling.  I backpedal, turning over desks and chairs.  One catches my back leg, and I fall to the floor, desperately opening my eReader to Echo.  Magic flash.  The windows blow inward, flooding the room with all that is Man—comics, squat racks, ninjas, laser guns—and the accountants-to-be begin screaming in terror.  Their skin melts off in a boiling hiss and what do you know, a grappling gun lands by my feet.  I fire it out a window, latch onto a bat-glider, and I slingshot away.  Saved!

  1. Hi, Kent, thank you for stopping by my blog.
And I quite like your style. There are days when I write like this, well, may be not as well, but along the same line of thought… you know, taking the mundane to the absurd. I love it, those who read my stuff at that time think I have lost it… but its fun. Will definitely be visiting regularly. Glad to have met!
