At least turn the damage into lessons learned. I think there is more peace with understanding than just success. Success can come without understanding and give false confidence. I would like to think that success is a side effect of understanding, and thus, learning from damage is a means to that end.

Indeed! Success is never guaranteed, either, its probability of occurring just increases with lessons learned. So the optimal focus is doing my best, enjoying the moment, and learning the lessons.
