Kiss the Ring

Benson held his hand out.

The ring gleamed under the streetlight.

A polished emblem of the Judge — white oval above a black crescent — staring up like a silent command.

“Kiss the ring,” Benson said.

Atriya stared at the symbol.

The Judge.

The Jury.

The entire hierarchy that decided who mattered and who didn’t.

He had grown up outside their protection.

He knew exactly what reverence looked like when it was forced.

“Not a chance.”

Some symbols demand loyalty.

Others demand submission.

Atriya had never been good at submission.

Respect is earned. Reverence is demanded.

  18. Atriya encapsulates all of us so well. at least me:) and that’s what good writing does. you find yourself in each character, stretching each of us to see truth in everything.

    1. Thanks! Yes, even though it’s science fiction, I thought the fact that he’s hit a plateau even though he’s trying his hardest, and the fact that suckups were surpassing him and making his life harder would be relatable.

  19. Science fiction is truth and you shape it in a way where the character almost does not feel human. In fact, when I first read your work with Atriya, who I immediately identified with, it felt feminine to me. That’s the power of one author fitting all humanity in one character, it is done almost quietly but with so much strength.

    1. Thank you! That’s one of the best compliments I’ve gotten! 🙂

  20. You’d actually made my day and the way you written the Atriya got my feelings, I have something to ask so hope you don’t mind I directly message you on IG

    1. No problem! I messaged you back
