IMHO, a writer (or any artist for that matter) must be gifted or willing. “To do what?” you may ask.
To breathe the air of their worlds, to dine with their characters, to live with their heroes, to sympathize with their villains…in short, to BECOME their stories. The audience, I believe, can tell the difference between patchwork reconstruction and a living, breathing world that exists somewhere out there in the infinity of possibility.

Excellent point– a story in which the author has been immersed comes to life in a way the “reconstruction,” as you put it, does not.

And it helps to have others support you in your worlds. My son was writing a poem with the Beowulf theme and I mentioned something didn’t seem right. It was a heart removal stanza. I stood in front of him and he read the bit and moved his arms…and discovered, I was right! His person could not have done it the way it was written.

Indeed! I did Echo mostly by myself and that’s cool cos I did the whole lone wolf thing…but writing is meant for others. Not considering others’ input is shortchanging myself, in my opinion.

I am a new author and see that you have posted chapters of Echo. How much do you post…everything? Or do you leave some out so that there is some intrigue for when the actual book is published? Just wondering?

I posted enough to let the audience know that I can do setting, action, and character. I think it’s around 10 to 15 k words

So true. They become your children and you begin to think of them as real. That is why I have told folks to write for the enjoyment and the love for/of it. If you get rich and famous, then it is a bonus.

I’d consider just being able to write full time without a regular job as being rich! Indeed, knowing that anyone was entertained at all by my work is a huge privilege!

They do! What’s interesting is when your audience begins liking what you thought of as a throwaway character and they begin growing in your mind….like the audience is creating the world with you!
