The intent behind revenge leads to a never-ending, tit-for-tat measuring contest where offenses are constantly weighed and scrutinized.  Is that our life’s purpose?  I don’t think so.

I like to think we were meant to enjoy this brief stay in the physical realm.  And though it may seem counterintuitive, I believe our natural state is to enjoy our lives, even in the midst of terrible adversity, or at least be able to enjoy how pain can blossom into a future pleasure.

Not only do I think that’s our natural state, I believe it’s our birthright.

There’s a point during the creative process where my belief in what I’m doing overrides any outside objections, no matter how logical or powerful they may be.

To reach this point, I have to tear my material apart and do my best to fit everything into a smooth-flowing narrative.  Once the foundation has been firmly laid, I have to FEEL for the parts that are wrong, and edit them by feel alone.  During that phase, there’s really no explanation for the choices I make, other than it rings true in my heart.

Maybe that’s where it can become transcendent.

Fear can be informative; it can be a reference point that helps me navigate toward my goals.

But if I let it run amuck it can also be an anchor, pulling at my perception until I refuse to take a single step in the direction I want.

I suspect we’re all hard workers at our core.  Even video game addicts have immense discipline; I personally couldn’t sit for more than 15 minutes playing video games nowadays.

I think we just need to tinker with our focus until our hard work gets channeled into something positive.

I wanted certain conditions because I believed I would be happy once I got them.  But then I learned that happiness is independent of conditions.  At first I didn’t trust this idea, but then I experienced it. 

And then, making a deliberate effort to turn in the direction of happiness, I saw that this effort opened my perception to opportunities and appreciation, magnifying my actions and infusing them with what I always wanted all along:  happiness, or at least the movement toward it.

I can be unhappy in the midst of good fortune, and happy in the bad.  Everything depends on my moment-to-moment focus and which direction I decide to point it.

I used to think my misfortune was punishment—a price I paid for lacking wisdom, quickness, strength, or cunning.  Then I realized it was clarification for what I truly wanted—benefits beyond what I had ever hoped for poured forth from my negative experiences, fulfilling childhood dreams far sooner than I thought possible.

So now, instead of railing against my supposed misfortune, I reach for a non-resistant state.  If optimism feels forced, I’ll settle for apathy or dispassion.  I know things will get better if I move on and allow them to.

We don’t always have the option to feel good, but I believe we always have the option to feel better.  We can always reach for the feeling of relief.  Whether that’s a less negative emotion (reaching for anger from a place of fear) or letting the negativity run its course without prodding or inflaming it (which will eventually open into apathy which will eventually open into optimism), the option is there.

I believe this is key to manipulating our emotional state, which manipulates our perception, which manipulates our outcomes.  It’s not just a feel-good exercise (even though that’s the best part of it).
