We don’t always have the option to feel good, but I believe we always have the option to feel better. We can always reach for the feeling of relief. Whether that’s a less negative emotion (reaching for anger from a place of fear) or letting the negativity run its course without prodding or inflaming it (which will eventually open into apathy which will eventually open into optimism), the option is there.
I believe this is key to manipulating our emotional state, which manipulates our perception, which manipulates our outcomes. It’s not just a feel-good exercise (even though that’s the best part of it).

Many people go from fear to anger. That’s the basis of most prejudices, which can then turn nasty. I think the better option is to recognise the fear and embrace it. In the Dune books, the Bene Gesserit, a cult of women, have what they call a Litany against Fear. I don’t promise to remember it exactly, but it goes something like this.
“I will not fear. Fear is the mindkiller. It is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will let it pass over me and through me. I will turn the inner eye and see it’s path. Where fear has been there will be nothing. Only I will remain.”
This is facing that fear. Admit it and confront it, only then can you overcome it.
I think this applies to most negative emotions. Don’t bury them. Face them, admit they exist.

I have always loved that “fear is the mind killer” quote! I find myself saying that to myself often 😊

Love this evil valley girl take – spot on, sir. Also I use loyalty to beat fear. Unfortunately, this means if you’re some sadistic selfish cheer bitch I ain’t saving your ass when the zombies come. I’m saving the pudgy girl who shared her cookies with me and my gay BFF. I may suck at it, but hey at least we’ll all go down together (with cookies).

I don’t know, I think it’s the girl who shared her cookies that trumps all. No sharing=no cookies…just saying.

I feel like anger for me personally can sometimes be useful in moving immediately past a situation, but that it is a masking emotion. What it covers is still hiding underneath and needs to be addressed in a way that allows healing (once I am feeling emotionally safe to do so) for me to fully move past something. But I agree we can usually make choices that can move us to a better place if not an ideal place, sometimes it’s the attitude not the circumstances that brings the happy.

That’s the right way to use it in my mind. Staying in anger isn’t productive, but using it as a stepping stone is.
