Willpower/intensive wishing are often thought of as an end but they’re really a means; no one would say to a quadruple amputee that their ability to play in the NBA arises from a “lack of will.” In all conflict, the idea of “will” is (at its worst) an entertaining failure, or (at its best) a lucky exploitation of an opponent’s lack of preparedness. What really matters is the ability to be humble, investigate, and constantly test each theory through functionality. And for that, willpower and positive thinking are simply prerequisites—they’re nothing without discipline, audacity, and clarity. Enough with the absolutes, the binaries, the utter nonsense of politicians and tough talkers. I have hope that this new age of information will bring about aggressively open minds and astutely balanced solutions.
