Musings

I’ve had many ask about solutions to writer’s block. I can only speak for myself.

1. I work off themes and how events/characters evolve to reflect ’em. The themes stay constant, so 1st question I ask is what possible events fit the theme?

2. I borrow/steal from great writers who wrote a similar story to mine. After learning Tarantino steals the composition shot-for-shot for some of his scenes from obscure movies, I use this as a tool: Good writers borrow, great writers steal. It also fuels creativity since you’re forced to look harder at what fits your story, and will give you a better shot of getting out of the rut.

That’s all I got. I’ll let you know when I have more.

P.S:  “Good writers borrow, great writers steal,” is a quote I stole from a greater writer than I.

  1. Browsing the internet for cool wallpapers or objects usually fuels my creativity. I see a cool space wallpaper and think “Aw man that could be an amazing setting for a space dogfight, or a mech showdown!” Another great source of ideas recently has been the StuffYouShouldKnow podcast. I listen to an episode on Maglev trains and think “aw that’d be a neat setting for a CIA op” or an episode on the Deep web and think “That could be a cool smuggler story” etc… Good piece by the way. I like that you stole the quote about steeling. Very meta. Much good.
