We all suffer trauma, and sadly, it seems that most of us react to it by withdrawing from opportunity, by digging deeper into the stifling tomb that comprises our comfort zones.

But it is possible, I believe, to integrate that trauma by seeking to understand why it happened, and positioning myself to prevent or mitigate it if similar conditions happen to arise.  That way, I stand a chance at sharpening my capabilities as I age.  I can become versatile and fluid, instead of beaten and cowed.

Most of the times I’ve played the villain or dimwit, Life has beaten me for my reprehensible behavior. 

Those beatings are a far stronger motivation to uphold my standards than the countless times I’ve been inspired by a hero.

Celebrating my triumphs is pretty easy, and so is dismissing my failures.

Those are egoic actions; it’s much harder (and more rewarding) to parse triumph and failure for the good and bad within each occurrence, so I can integrate the knowledge each experience has gifted me with, and sink deeper into a harmonious state of being.

In the existential sense, saying one thing matters and another doesn’t is a ridiculous stance; we only have to look up at the stars to realize how small and insignificant we are.

So the real question is, “what is useful and sustainable?”

Thus far, that seems to be the best way to play the game of “human being.”

I’ve been blessed more than some, cursed more than others, but ruminating on whether I deserve more or less seems to be a mental rabbit hole that chips away at my existing potential.  A better question to ask is, “How do I use these blessings and curses to achieve my goals?”

If I can focus and act on that, then I stop bemoaning or lauding the fates.  I simply assess the map of life, and strike out on the most fulfilling course.  It all becomes a play, instead of a fruitless argument.

The baser parts of us will rationalize actions founded on comfort (one more cheat meal, snooze five more minutes, watch one more episode) or self-worth (you don’t need to sleep because you’re a “beast,” you don’t need to eat because you don’t deserve it, etc. etc.) all in an effort to whittle us down into lack and deficiency.

If I have to use the cliched paradigm of “warrior,” I use it against this baser part of myself, because it attacks me on a constant basis, and has an endless variety of tricks and traps at its disposal.

For other people, however, I try and let my actions do the talking.  That’s another trick of the baser self—it tries to convince you you can change someone’s mind by simply haranguing them.  No one changes unless they’re ready, or the pain of life falls upon them. 

(In most cases, it seems, the pain of life MAKES them ready.)

On convincing others:

Although it’s uncomfortable in the short-term (because it requires a boatload of discipline), it’s much easier to embody your beliefs and principles, swaying others through the evidence of your life, instead of trying to argue theory with them.

The press of life will reinforce our habits, whether they’re good or bad.

It may seem annoying to delay short-term gratification and create a foundation of good habits, but in the long run, it keeps you from being weighed down by anchor after anchor, until you’re mindlessly struggling to keep your head above water.  If you invest in good habits, you’ll keep yourself light and lithe, and you’ll have options later down the line.

You’ll be able to surf the tides of fortune.  You’ll also be able to pull up anyone who needs a hand.
