Often, people worship at the altar of Unshakable Bias, ready to commit unspeakable acts and perpetuate dogmatic beliefs in order to support its crumbling pillars.

But if you turn away from Unshakable Bias, and simply focus on the desire to improve and assist those around you, you will be rewarded with novelty and solutions, methodology and results. And, in the course of doing so, you will receive unexpected gifts from the most unlikeliest of sources.

This is the difference between being wedded to the specifics and honoring general intent.

If I had to describe my favorite approach to life, I would tell people to acknowledge the negative and focus on the positive. That opens the perception to lessons learned and the best way forward.

I’ve tried the other way—acknowledge the positive and focus on the negative—but it has never worked out. I get the occasional break but I mostly just find an increasing number of problems.

Much has been said of the effortless “flow state” that accompanies creativity. I believe the implication behind this flow is that existence is by default creative, and all we have to do is relax and allow it.

If I don’t feel trust, I settle for faith. If I can’t feel faith, I settle for resignation. If I can’t feel resignation, I settle for apathy.

I’ve come to the belief—through personal experience—that even though some of these emotions are supposedly “negative,” I can use them as stepping stones to climb back up into optimism or joy. I just have to acknowledge which one I resonate with, then abide there and wait for it to open up into something better.

When things go haywire, everyone’s entitled to the “spoiled prince mentality” (throw your hands up, complain, demand that someone else fix it) but the sooner you become solutions oriented—assess your options, figure out what you can do with what you have, and how that can improve your position so you can maneuver or advance—the better.

I like knowing that all things die—that bad things end and that good things will blossom from the most unexpected (or horrific) circumstances.

The more I keep this in focus, the more life becomes an amusing game, instead of an exhausting attempt to keep score and enforce an existential tit-for-tat.

Novelty is found within perspective, not within circumstance. For every circumstance is inherently novel—given the continual expansion of the universe, its atomic configuration is always different, second by second, moment by moment.

In order to tap novelty, it is not so much about seeking it as letting it in.

I used to think the best revenge was a measure of success, but everyone has a different measure of what constitutes success. Those who hate you will bide their time until you hit a rough spot so they can ridicule your hardships.

Rather than obsess over success or failure, I think it’s way better to be as happy as possible. Life is too short to be drawn into a petty game of meaningless one-upmanship. Even if you are “successful,” it doesn’t matter if you aren’t happy.
