When things go haywire, everyone’s entitled to the “spoiled prince mentality” (throw your hands up, complain, demand that someone else fix it) but the sooner you become solutions oriented—assess your options, figure out what you can do with what you have, and how that can improve your position so you can maneuver or advance—the better.

So true! This reminded me of a saying I read somewhere a while ago: learning is not mandatory, neither is survival. A short pep talk we can give ourselves whenever we start sliding into that ‘spoiled prince mentality’ 🙂

It’s usually better to do it yourself. Others can’t fix your problems. ( unless it’s a burst pipe, then I guess a plumber might be better.)

I think I’m learning this lesson right now. My job has been throwing me some “off-speed” stuff. At first, I was in panic mode and getting angry. Now I’m making use of what resources I do have and admitting what I don’t have by asking for help. I think this process is not only adding knowledge to my toolbox, but putting me in a better light with others. They see me learning and making things happen versus throwing up my arms and getting angry.

I have to admit I enjoy a good bitchfest with my girlfriend or a close friend. But after I’m done bitching and whining, I’d rather fix things myself. If you want something done well, do it yourself, after all. Hope you’re doing alright!

I wouldn’t say you are entitled to that attitude. But I do agree that solutions can only come from within.

Never had an engineer mentality but synthesizers taught me that if you aren’t hearing what you want to hear you have figure it out, not bitch about it. Like an engineer, if the tracks don’t line up and the train’s coming, there’s no time for fault finding or complaining, only time to fix it.
