Musings

Many think themselves free of addiction, thinking that the only detrimental addictions are the illegal ones.  They qualify this by touting that they can still work at a job, go to school, or “at least” they are better off than their peers.  Is this enough, though?  In my mind it is not.  While addiction need not be conquered to the point where I’m engaging in ego-stroking feats of endurance, it DOES need to be conquered to the point where I can engage in deep, soul-fulfilling activities every single day.  It needs to be conquered to the point where at the end of each day, I can look at myself in the mirror and say, “Good job.  Let’s shoot for the moon tomorrow as well.”

THAT’s what I’m aiming for.

  1. Very True! How many of us are addicted to food, pleasure, sex, entertainment, money or any other common daily temptations. Most of these are good in and of themselves but when abused can lead to both physical, social and mental problems. Thanks for the introspect

  2. Of course there are alcoholics. But I found I was addicted to sugar. I actually had withdrawals when I went off it. There are more types of addiction than Heinz has pickles. I applaud your goal of not just living, but living meaningfully.

    • No not at all! I think the world is here for us to enjoy, but I think that if we are addicted to the point where we can’t enjoy it in the fashion we want, THAT’s bad. My buddy actually enjoys video games more when he breaks it up into intervals that are interspersed with productive stuff, but he can’t sustain it; he usually plays in like these giant twelve hour blocks. THAT’s bad. He doesn’t even enjoy himself after an hour or two.
