Musings

In writing, a bit of filler is usually essential.  But instead of drudging through it, a lot of times I let my mind drift, and I find that I can throw in unexpected significance, transforming it from “filler” into something I’m excited about.  The key is to be open to possibility, and not focus on just telling your story, but fully inhabiting it.

I think that can apply to all of life.

    • Personally, I see it as a logical connection between events/descriptions in a story that does not advance the themes of the material. What I imply is that with an open mindset, it is possible to create that logical bridge but also creatively infuse it with thematic significance.

      • Well take B v S, for example. All the way up until the two fought, there was great commentary and themes woven around divinity, simplicity vs. complexity, and the fallibility of governments and the corporate world. Suddenly, after they fight, rather than using their conflict as a deeply significant grand clash of philosophies like it could have been, they start pushing the “cool” aspects in hope for a franchise. You have plot devices for the rest of the justice league used to set up and introduce franchises rather than dedicated to telling as meaningful a story as possible. Now I understand why they did it; there’s a lot of money on the line and a lot of investors that need to see a continuing business possibility, but that story, in a nutshell, illustrates where you can lay down a good foundation and have it hijacked by commercial/spectacle-oriented interests. Hope that helped, I know it was convoluted.
