When I obsess over importance, I twist my perception into agonized knots. When I relax into the knowledge that everything fades, I enjoy the flow of luck and life. Sure, I may have to act as if things are critical (I love taking part in the ongoing game) but my state of mind is easy and light, just the way it was meant to be.

Judgment is fun. Comparison is good. They’re illusory games where I size up values, trading pros and cons like chips or tokens.

But when I forget they’re games, they become obsessive tyrants. I wasn’t born so I could chase after “perfect.” I walk this earth so I can enjoy the unfolding of time and space.

That’s the reason behind comparison and judgment—to accelerate the flow and delight in the rush. Not to sneer at others’ choices, or to beat myself up for every little flaw.

Everything fades and dies away, so why not at least enjoy the ride? It was never supposed to be a hellish journey, or a brutish slog toward a possible heaven.

I used to hoard “evidence,” making the case for this or that based on a jenga tower of past experience. I grew increasingly frustrated as irony reared its ugly head—most of the time, my well-laid plans turned out far differently than I initially expected.

So now, the evidence appears to indicate that plans are useful for charting a course, but unreliable for securing an outcome. Personally, it’s much more important to enjoy what comes as it arises, and fully appreciate what’s in front of me. That’s what mystics/sages have supposedly said since time immemorial.

And THAT evidence seems to have been there all along. I just wasn’t looking in any of the right places.

Did we come into being to suffer and toil? To sacrifice and endure within a limited set of physical senses? Outwardly, that seems to be the case.

But inwardly, it seems that mystics and luminaries say we needn’t be bound by drudgery and pain, and that in point of fact, we never actually were. If you poke around the edges of their perplexing writings, they seem to imply that our inward state will eventually reflect into outward circumstances.

Even if this isn’t true in a magical sense, it certainly is in a psychological one. Our subconscious beliefs shape our perception and outcomes. Watch Derren Brown’s mentalist feats. He’ll give you physical proof of this.

But maybe—just maybe—it actually is magic. Maybe it’s the foundation of every miracle.

I have to admit, I’m biased towards that outlandish possibility. If you measure the world by action, karma, or some unknowable quantification of heavenly or hellish behavior, life funnels down into a giant transaction where I fret and worry, obsessed over the impact of every little deed and its future ramifications. Why would we volunteer for a game where we know so little and receive such harsh punishment?

It all comes together when I let myself relax and appreciate my present circumstances (if not the pleasure, then at least the potential). When I feel the flow of transcendent awareness, I really don’t care about all that other stuff I just described. I don’t have to figure out The Big Answer.

Because I’m living it.

Almost every philosophy/religion I’ve seen implies that life is full of pain and suffering, and that we have to toil and agonize in order to achieve an abiding peace.

But what if that isn’t true? What if the pain/suffering is merely a mechanism that cements our understanding of what is personally pleasing on this unexplainable, nonsensical adventure? What if it’s a way of gathering preferences and information in an ever-expanding universe, so we have a direction in which to channel our creativity?

Maybe the real reward is in channeling that creativity, revealed in a flush of purpose and energy. Maybe all we have to do is relax into the present, allowing our greater aspects to flow and spill, joyously uniting us with the rest of existence. Maybe we don’t have to indulge in a transactional slog where we flay ourselves down to a predetermined standard that’s worthy of heaven/enlightenment/awareness.

And maybe it’s all the more valuable because we get to choose if that’s true or false.
