In my mind, “taking what I can get” usually means I’m setting aside my ego and accepting a piecemeal advantage which I can eventually leverage into a future goal.

Sometimes, it means holding firm and refusing an offer, because the refusal either opens me up to a better opportunity, or I receive more in a subtler, more fulfilling sense of the word.

If youth is a mindset that facilitates flexibility, growth, and the ability to revel in new adventures and new challenges, then old age is an attachment to fear, comfort, and a faulty assumption that one has accounted for every possibility and concluded it is better to never take a risk or consider an outlandish idea.

Curiously enough, I have seen both youth and old age displayed by children and adults.

For me, emotional intelligence is about intuiting the fastest possible route toward a positive mindset (which translates to a positive perspective, which psychologically primes me to look for opportunities and advantages).

Sometimes, this means deliberately choosing a positive thought. But if I try to jump the gun and become too positive too fast (if it feels forced and phony) then it ends up working against me, locking me into a more negative state of mind. So sometimes, it means abiding in the negativity, patiently waiting for it to relax its hold so I can move freely toward a better emotion.

When I consider the vastness of existence and my limited influence, I’m struck by the futility and inherent pointlessness. Ironically, this frees me to choose my own meaning, since any meaning behind reality seems completely unknowable.

(Maybe that was the point all along)

Improbable dreams catch my attention, luring me forward with novelty and wonderment.

Personally, I find relief in moving toward them every day (it can be a small step, as long as it’s a step), and abiding in the idea that all will be well no matter what.

Because many of my dreams have come undone, only to show me something greater in their stead. Who knows what awaits me in the future? The joy lies in the dream and the movement.

The best way to write is to focus on truth as you see it.

All that other stuff—humility, knowledge, experience—that’s supposed to inform your writing is really about focusing on truth as you see it. And since it is a universal law that the truth as you see it will evolve and grow, so will your writing.

That’s how you know you’re doing it right: if you’re rejuvenated by the natural flow of change, running from your spirit to your brain to your fingers to your keyboard. Sometimes it happens while you’re actually writing—I’m surprised on a regular basis by my own story.

I love it when that happens.

We are caught in the throes of an ever-expanding existence, destined to forge our own meaning from a sea of outcomes.

Fortunately, we are given the limitations of time and space. They encourage us to walk in certain directions, ensuring we aren’t overwhelmed by a deluge of choices.

This game called life comes with a definite end-date. Personally, I believe that death leads to something transcendent and beautiful and unconditionally forgiving. I don’t think of it as a looming tyrant, but an inevitable release.

In other words, we are doomed to happiness.
