I don’t believe we can always choose happiness, but I believe we can always move towards it.  Instead of despair, we can move towards anger.  Instead of anger, we can move towards irritation.  Instead of irritation, we can move towards boredom.  Instead of boredom, we can move towards satisfaction.

By choosing the direction of it—by searching our thoughts for the one that gives relief, abiding in it, then repeating the process after our perception settles into the next emotion up—we can blend with what I believe is a natural benevolence that underlies existence.
