Echo: A Dystopian Science Fiction Novel

My boss claps my shoulder and whispers in my ear.  “Business trip to Utah next Monday.  Mando…as in mandatory.”  I mutter, “Why?  So you can get drunk off your ass and try to make out with your subordinates?”  He turns around and sputters, “Excuse me?  This is TEAM-BUILDING!”  I’m about to apologize when he grabs my lapels and shoves his face in mine.  “Who the HELL do you think you are, Kent?”  His work-posse creeps up behind him and crosses their arms, giving me ire-filled looks.  I’m about to apologize again when they start murmuring the Lord of the Flies chant:  “Kill the beast.  Cut his throat!  Spill his blood!”  They begin repeating it louder, and their eyes blaze with demonic light.  Fangs extend from their mouths, and veins of crawling black engulf their skin.  My boss, still holding me, begins laughing in a hellish, double-toned voice.  I open my eReader to Echo.  Magic flash.  Brilliant blue, graphene nano-weave begins unfolding and snapping over me.  Glowing, white-hole powered cores appear on my chest and palms.  My boss looks on in amazement as the circuitry segments up my neck.  Right before it envelops my head I utter in a gravelly voice, “This isn’t Lord of the Flies and my name sure as hell ain’t Piggy.  But you got one thing right:  I AM a beast.”  I shove him off with alloyed arms and stand in calm repose as the hellspawn swing wildly at me.  Punches clatter off my armor and I say, “Computer:  Analyze fight patterns.  Initiate countermeasures.”  A gatling cannon unfolds on my shoulder and begins spitting out a swath of tri-weave sabot.  I put my hands together and a gorgeous techno-katana sections out from them in a series of beautiful-sounding clanks.  I charge my possessed coworkers, hitting badass samurai poses as I slice open demon-skin with my Jahn-teller composite blade.  I sprint through them and BOOM!  A ring of compressed air blasts outward from my body as my boot-jets shoot me through the high-rise window.  I barrel-roll and whoop in delight, making sure to give my enemies the finger as I leave glowing trails of ion exhaust.
