Echo News: 4 Star Review!!! Woohoo!

Robert Adkisson has posted a great 4 star review for Echo Volume 1!!!  Thank You Robert!!!  I agree with his constructive criticism, and I’m poring through some fiction authors as we speak (Stephen King and Marcus Sakey), to look in depth to what works, what I can get away with, and how to up the quality.  Funny thing-essay techniques (no sentence fragments, proper construction and strict punctuation, etc.) all those things can be a serious detriment to getting the feeling across, and in fiction, that’s the most important thing:  A clear evocation of feeling and drama.  So it’s a fine balancing act, this incursion into the world of feeling:  letting the rules slip to intensify or accent the pacing.

    You’re so right that is a balancing act. I remember both in music theory and in writing that we were taught strict rules so that we knew when and how to properly break them. It’s part of the art. I know I use a good amount of passive sentences, which are generally seen as another nono. But it needs to be a blend, and that’s part of our learning process. We’ll just improve.

      I like passive sentences, run-on sentences, adverbs….all of the no-nos, haha! As much as S. King railed against adverbs, I’m picking out bundles of them as I read the Dark Tower. The rules have often confused me…I think the key is just massive amounts of editing and experience, and eventually, like polishing boots or ironing clothes, the story comes out straight and clean.

    Congratulations on the review. I actually respect 4 star reviews as they give me room to grow, especially if there is well thought out constructive criticism contained within them.

      Too true! Plus I only have one of the reviews from a personal acquaintance. I believe that it’s a little false and disingenuous to have a pristine 5.0 rating where you can tell all reviews are friends or family.
