I believe that as incredible as it may seem, it’s possible to view any adverse event in the same light, and also vice versa:  to be completely dissatisfied, no matter how great the fortune or luck.

The “secret to life?”  After investigating any number of religious/scientific/philosophical/mystical viewpoints, I realized that at a certain point, they all get obstructively specific about the nature of existence.  When they get TOO specific and TOO demanding about “how things should be,” or “the way it is,” then arguments and dissatisfaction come into being.

The “secret to life,” I believe, is pursuing any/all viewpoints with ease and fun, and reveling in Mystery.  When I enjoy what’s in front of me without getting too specific (trying to corral it with words, justifications, and hierarchy), I feel a transcendental force behind the flow of events, and a natural enjoyment arises all on its own.

Personally, I’ve found the benefit of extreme duress is the point where I internally surrender.  Where I let go of all concern and give in to the relief I will someday die, and grasp that whatever I’m going through is fleeting and  transient.

If I can embrace the “fuck it” mentality and focus my whole being on reaching for improvement (because if I’m going to die, then fuck it—why not?) I typically experience dramatic well-being.

I don’t need to be pushed that far to feel well-being, but the times it has happened are a valuable reference point for the feeling of “fuck it.”

It appears my perspective is dependent on training.  Oddly enough, my perspective doesn’t seem to require any willpower, just a willingness to relax and consciously focus.

Throughout my life, I’ve been taught that any skill is a result of effort and sacrifice, but this doesn’t seem to be the case with my perspective.  It is more akin to training a dog using positive reinforcement:  recognize the distraction, then focus on something more constructive.  If I push against/condemn the distraction, it only seems to become stronger. 

The distraction is valid, of course, but so is the object of my focus.  The question is not of validity (you can find evidence for anything, if you want to go down that rabbit hole), but what I find constructive.

I try and accept what’s happening in the moment—do the best I can with what’s in front of me.

Because if (as the core of every religion seems to hint) there is an unconditional benevolence that limited itself so it could experience adventure, then that omnipotent piece of me created this very instance.  And if I can line up with it, then it will create more instances that expand its benevolence.

Or I could throw a fit.  I could curse this random universe, and constantly live in fear that the other shoe might drop.

Curiously enough, it seems that misery can persist under the “best” conditions, and that happiness can exist under the “worst.”

I suspect this is the abiding truth under all philosophies and all religions:  some unknowable benevolence has designed consciousness so it can attain peace under any set of circumstances—not because of them, but regardless of them.

According to the dictates of society and science, this seems absurd.  But so does the idea that society and science have grasped the inviolable truth behind reality. 

(Which is why science is awesome; I love the paradoxes that arise from our leading-edge discoveries, and I love that science hasn’t yet claimed to know everything.)
