It appears my perspective is dependent on training. Oddly enough, my perspective doesn’t seem to require any willpower, just a willingness to relax and consciously focus.
Throughout my life, I’ve been taught that any skill is a result of effort and sacrifice, but this doesn’t seem to be the case with my perspective. It is more akin to training a dog using positive reinforcement: recognize the distraction, then focus on something more constructive. If I push against/condemn the distraction, it only seems to become stronger.
The distraction is valid, of course, but so is the object of my focus. The question is not of validity (you can find evidence for anything, if you want to go down that rabbit hole), but what I find constructive.

Thanks for this! I found it interesting what you write about willpower. In my experience for most people the “willingness to consciously focus” requires a lot of willpower. Even just to start training to guide one’s attention to what is constructive. I think it’s a very valuable gift that you have, and training can of course only shape it into something even more constructive.

Focusing on resisting empowering that which is resisted… Well, you’ve learned the secret to maintaining focus in zen meditation. 🙂 Meanwhile everyone else is trying to reinvent mediation as “mindfulness” because it’s easier.
