I’ve come to believe that transcendence isn’t something you train or sacrifice for, it’s something you allow. You can allow it to flow in the most bizarre or extreme circumstances, which is why it’s transcendent—it transcends the bounds of logic and preference. And if you believe there is a benevolent order at the heart of existence, then transcendence will result in positivity. It may not seem like it in the moment, but it has to be that way in the end.

I take great pleasure in a state of 100% belief—when I’m deep in the zone, and I know what’s going to happen. But if I can’t get there, I relax into the truth that everything I do is just a game, destined to fade in the river of time.

Both approaches lack resistance. They allow me to appreciate the present moment, and the greater flow that lies beneath it.

Lately, I’ve taken more to letting things happen.

I make plans, then feel my way through unexpected circumstances. Of course I use logic, but if it ever feels like I’m forcing my thoughts, I ease back and do the best I can with what I have, and leave the rest up to fate.

I’m starting to believe in the crazy idea that enjoyment might be unconditional. I think I’ve simply become sick of fighting conditions—using them as an excuse to worry and suffer. Maybe there’s something to being a happy idiot.

Because who knows the underlying conditions behind reality? No one, seemingly. But many seem to know the fundamental condition that makes reality into something worth living—full engagement with the present moment, along with a willingness to appreciate whatever comes my way. Sometimes it isn’t immediately pleasant, but maybe it’ll lead to something better than I can imagine. That’s happened to me on numerous occasions.

Who knows? I’m tired of trying to figure it out. I think I’ll work with what’s in front of me and leave the rest to fate.

Specifics are subordinate to general goals; specifics are great if they light the way forward, but if they’re overly exact, they’re a weight around your neck.

If you’re creative and practical, you can quickly assess whether goals are being serviced, and consistently implement the best specifics. Sometimes they’re the ones you planned to use, and sometimes you make them up on the fly.

Forced positivity can help a little, but its very definition—forced—requires me to push against a negative outcome, which keeps that negativity firmly in my mind and allows it to grow.

What’s really weird is if I just relax and reach for whatever feels true—negative or positive—the next best emotion opens up, and my truth moves there. I automatically feel better and better, but it isn’t a function of effort or discipline; it’s simply a matter of relaxation and focus.

For most of my life, I have focused on effort; if I wasn’t striving and feeling the pressure, I wasn’t trying hard enough.

But as I concentrated more on doing my best, I saw that my performance was being held back by my strain. To tap into flow state, there is absolute focus, but no internal strain. While my external actions might seem demanding, they are a natural extension of my unfettered mind.

That’s how it should be. It’s not how it is, all of the time, but that’s okay—because stressing out about it takes me away from it.

I have experienced fulfillment in pain, misery in luxury, and, of course, I have felt the opposite—misery in pain and fulfillment in luxury.

At first, I merely suspected that our perspective is what drove our misery or fulfillment. But then, as the years passed, I came to see it, believe it, and finally, accept it.

I think that’s what turns it from a cliche into a reality.

When I let go of the concepts of “enemy” and “fight” (internally), their outward manifestations become exhilarating challenges and thrilling adventures. (And ironically, I seem to claim victory way more often.)

This isn’t always immediately apparent, but as time goes on, it becomes increasingly undeniable.
