Like most people, I’ve struggled and striven for optimal systems—an evangelist set of do’s and don’ts that will shape my outcomes—but I’ve found that unless I’m dealing with safe, predictable, low-reward problems, it’s a shortfall approach.

It’s better to train my moment-to-moment focus, trusting that everything happens for a good reason. This opens my eyes to possibility and potential. If none is apparent, then it’s time to abide in my belief that this too shall pass, and better things will come.

If I believe in my own worthiness and I work with what I’m given, I may not have to “pay the price” for whatever I desire. My perception can be trained to see reward/synchronicity as a matter-of-fact occurrence, instead of a scrap I should grovel and sacrifice for. With a trained perception, I will spot “hidden” opportunities and dismiss unnecessary negativity.

Or I could see things like a religious evangelist, where everything I do is rarely—if ever—good enough. Where I have to suffer and crawl in order to reach my goal. Where I can enjoy my rewards for a split-second, then go back to suffering and crawling, all in the hope I can eventually reach the promised land after I die.

No thanks. I’d rather pay attention to my moment-to-moment focus. If I’m not able to feel immediate happiness, I can always concentrate on muting the negativity of unpleasant events (this too shall pass) and maybe even see positive potential, and maybe even urge it to fruition.

Regardless of whether I’ve reached my destination, I can always turn in its general direction. That, to me, is the art of enjoying the journey.

To me, winning is not about browbeating others into sharing my beliefs. It is EMBODYING my beliefs, Living my convictions, letting them evolve and sharpen so that I continuously become more harmonious, effective, and happy.

And then, if i have to argue with someone, I stand calmly in the bedrock of my substantiated belief—from concept to trial to real-world result. If someone doesn’t agree with me, fine; I’m secure enough to let them do so, and open enough to see if they have something to teach me. But if their way is dysfunctional, then I have given them a glimpse of a better alternative.

Not just with my words, but through my very way of being.

I have worked towards goals for the feeling I get when I finally achieve them. But now I think it’s possible to be happy regardless of whether a goal is achieved, regardless of whether the condition is present.

I believe being happy will prime my subconscious to be optimistic, allowing me to see hidden opportunities; to generate the hope and energy to put forth an honest effort and capitalize on its unfolding.

The art of perception is relaxing—not forcing—my mind towards happiness. While I may not always be able to jump straight to joy, I can always turn in its direction. I can choose to just acknowledge the bad instead of wallowing in it, and I can choose to accept my circumstances—“It is what it is, work with what you’ve got”—in order to let go of my resistance and open my mind to accessible improvement.

One of the greatest pleasures in life is encountering resistance, being knocked off my game, then realizing it doesn’t matter because we’re tiny specks in a incomprehensibly vast reality.

This opens me to resignation, then satisfaction, then optimism, then surety. Because if nothing matters, why not hope for the best, work towards lasting fulfillment, and—most important of all—enjoy the moment?

Work with what you’ve got, keep an eye out for more, and after you’ve double-checked (maybe triple-checked) you’ve put in an honest effort, wait for the next opportunity.

Often, “working with what you’ve got” is dismissed as settling for less, but I disagree. I believe the approach I’ve outlined is that of the self reliant problem-solver, open to letting their creativity alert them to new opportunity after they’ve performed their due diligence. I’ve benefitted multiple times from unexpected positive repercussions, all due to “working with what I’ve got.”

The other approach—the all-or-nothing, never settle for less than exactly what I want—is often used by those with the mentality of a spoiled prince, unwilling to weave the threads of opportunity into the rope he desires.

Well those threads will be woven nonetheless, into an inescapable restraint made of regret and remorse.

Is there something benevolent beneath all of existence? That’s an age-old question, and I believe the answer is yes.

The follow-up question is: does this “something” demand toil and tribute, sacrifice and righteousness?

I believe the answer is no. I believe that because existence is benevolent by default, we can consciously harmonize with its positivity or simply relax into emptiness or apathy (the idea behind meditation) and allow the positivity to flow into and through us.

We can also choose to be negative, but in my opinion, this doesn’t make us regress. It simply holds us in place against the flow of benevolence. Hopefully, we don’t get tired of trying to go upstream, but in the end it doesn’t really matter—we eventually die and are absorbed back into existence.

So in my view, death is a pleasant transition in some cases, a relief in others.
