Most people are capable of playing by the rules.  But restricting yourself to playing by “the rules” means restricting yourself to tradition and doctrine.  IMHO, mastery entails not just the ability to play by the rules, but also the ability to operate effectively without them.

Or the ability to rewrite them entirely.

Most subscribe to a philosophy that gives them alternatives to leaving their comfort zone.  But making use of ANY philosophy means staunchly resisting these alternatives.  Making full use of a philosophy means placing evolution first and delving deep into growth…

Regardless of whether it’s comfortable or not.

Perhaps—given the infinity of time and space that stretches before us—everything is BS.

Well if that’s the case, then I’m gonna try and make the most entertaining/uplifting/emotionally charged BS that I can.

We’ve all been scarred from taking leaps of faith that didn’t work.  Ironically, I believe that the best way to heal those scars is to learn from them, laugh at them…and take another leap of faith.  Because if we’re fated to die, there is ultimately nothing to lose.

And everything to be gained.

As a writer (or any kind of artist), have some crazy ass beliefs.  You need them in order to party with hard-boiled detectives, cyborgs, killers, elves, cowboys…what have you.  That other stuff?  Those mundanities that keep people ensconced in drudge and toil?  For the writer, those mundanities are parts of a game that must be played.  One that needs to be honored, but in the end, just another game.

Always and forever, the PARTY is where it’s at.

Be there for your characters; somewhere in the breadth of infinity, they’re real.  They’re not there to make you feel godlike, or to answer to whimsical demands.  They’re there for you to suffer with, to experience glory with, and I think that if they sense you’re with them, then your readers will sense that as well.

IMHO, THAT is how you transcend doctrine and structure, and THAT is how you transmit a story.

When the world is against you, you are presented with many opportunities.  Among them are self-pity and training.  Training for what, though?  More  “Toughness?”  Or  “Character?”  Given the opposition, I try to set my sights a little higher.

When the world is against me, I see it as training to conquer the world.  😉
