Musings

“Fair weather friends” are awesome and I’ll tell you why:

1.  They serve as cautionary tales; their way may work in the short term, but countless parables speak of how they’re ultimately doomed to failure and regret.

2.  They motivate me to enact my vengeance through the truest, most constructive form of self-expression:  productive action that serves the collective.  When those fair weather friends come around again, drawn to your light because you’re getting results, or because they need your help, then you help them out, and your vengeance becomes all the more satisfying, for you have made your case and won the argument without landing a single blow, raising your voice, or saying a word.

Legitimate success is the most fulfilling, compassionate, soul-nourishing form of revenge.  Nothing can beat it.

  1. I love the way you put it. I confess I don’t have a lot of patience for takers, but I don’t actually begrudge them for longer than the time it takes to eject them from my life. I will help them for as long as I feel inclined, and, once I don’t feel like doing it anymore, I’ll just move on, no hard feelings. They’ll surely find someone else to take my place fairly easily. 😉

  2. I’ve had a few fair weather friends in my time. I suppose I’ve handled them in different ways, too. First and foremost, I’ve discovered, is not to say or do anything to reject them in a manner that allows them to play the victim. Let their failing as a fair weather friend be THEIR failing alone.
Once I’ve discovered that flaw in a “friend”, I typically just begin distancing myself from them. Most times, it seems, such a person does not notice.
The one that did notice my chosen path away was simply told that I had no time for him at the moment unless he could help me with a couple of projects I had going on in my life. I never heard from him again.
