If I refuse the lessons that arise from life, it will become a cruel, merciless tyrant.  It will snatch away my time, my options, my ability/inclination to help others, as well as my fulfillment.

But if I do my best to learn, then life will become a harsh—but fair—teacher.  I even stand a chance of making it my ally.
