“Apply known principles to unknown frontiers, ” then the unexpected is expected. When known principles do not produce “logical” results, the protagonist must adapt to survive and intuit to thrive.

I would say having to learn new rules of the game is a known principle. It’s been echoed throughout time immemorial. 😉
