Most people try and tailor external circumstances around their mental operating systems. For individuals with a high caliber of talent/luck, they can keep this up indefinitely. For the rest of us, it seems that reality will give us clues to look inward and upgrade our systems. It seems to me that people who ignore those clues steadily weave a web of denial, instinctively fleeing any hints that they have to hold themselves accountable. (I think this is how people eventually become old, bitter, and trapped in stagnant behaviors) Those who heed the clues may or may not achieve an upgrade, but they can at least say they tried. I don’t think this choice (or any other, for that matter) is a reflection of someone’s worth; only an indicator of past experiences and the preferences that those experiences generate.
But personally, I’d like to try and live life outside of that web of denial.
Getting old and bitter is a stumbling block. There are so many things to get bitter about. The art is to keep positive, optimistic and active. That way we can ward off the evils.

I’ve heard this called ‘narrativism,’ the condition of treating one’s life like a story. Even authoritarian governments cater to this idea. I have to wonder if it could be seen as a certifiable psychological condition.

I think I know what you mean. I feel that bitter people are mirrors to when I myself am becoming bitter with life. It allows me to see my own thinking patterns outside of myself, and try to avoid them. Still, I imagine I am not completely objective, and there are things that will always tick me off and make me act childish.

I don’t think anyone can ever be completely objective (how could they, when science—our most reliably consistent model of reality, has yet to grasp the objective truth of reality?), so I go with more of an experimental approach. I try things out, assess the results, and try to do it better next time. Honestly I think that’s all we can do.

Web of denial. Woven with strands so tight you just wonder how they’ll ever break!

They don’t in most cases, I think. I think in most cases, people just avoid larger and larger sections of life that would force them to have to break that web.
