Regardless of what we do, time will take away our options one by one, blessing us all with the mercy of transience.

But if we apply discipline and we‘re honest with the evidence (so we can see where we are in relation to others, and chart a course to where we want to be), then we can surf the tides of chance and opportunity, and make the most of this nonsensical life.

Look up at the sky and consider our predicament: we’re little specks on a ball of dirt, hurling incredibly fast through the depths of infinity. Our lives are inherently meaningless, aside from the meaning we decide to give them.

So it behooves me study myself as mercilessly as possible—to stare in the mirror and acknowledge every failing, every fear, every tendency and inclination…so I can chart a course through this nonsensical life, and forge myself into something with a purpose.

Purpose makes each action into something worth doing, instead of a futile gesture made by a dying collection of mass and energy.

People keep arguing about what “Truth” means. Devastating wars have been waged over what people think it is. Scientists have been imprisoned, tortured, and shunned when their demonstrably reliable findings have conflicted with what people believe to be “True.” (sometimes by other scientists, ironically enough).

I just shrug and leave it a Mystery. If I focus on long-term functionality (ethics is required for this, as organizations/relationships will collapse over the long term without a sound base of ethics), it allows me to be whatever I need to be, and hew to all those frustratingly contradictory parables. I can be as faithful as Abraham, as ruthless as Moses, as altruistic as Jesus, as assertive as Mohammed, as serene as Buddha…whatever propagates harmony through the foreseeable future.

And I suspect, that if I live that way, I’ll forget all about “Truth,” and eventually become it.

My best ideas occur to me while I’m at the gym, tearing myself down so I can induce growth, and make myself into something stronger.

I think there’s something to that. Which is why I always try and question myself, to see if I’m clinging to something obstructive, something I need to demolish.

As I’ve navigated complexity/adversity, I‘ve suffered damage. I’ve suffered countless headaches and been dragged down into wasteful expenditures of time/effort.

But rather than retreat into comfortable simplicity, closing myself off from the deeper reaches of the fantastic unknown, I choose to craft this damage into weapons and tools. So instead of withdrawing, I can venture forth again and again, bringing something back to the greater collective. It may hurt in the moment, but in the end, I believe I’ll minimize regret and maximize fulfillment.

And ironically, I also believe that along the way, it will hurt less and less, and eventually turn into continuous, abiding pleasure. Maybe even ecstasy.

Rewards don’t just come from navigating what is immediately uncomfortable; they also come from navigating what is CONCEPTUALLY uncomfortable.

Some people grind fruitlessly away at grueling routines, only to find that if they’d switched to a different routine earlier on—instead of turtling up into the same, stubborn justifications—they’d have made exponential progress.

Which, ironically, would have made them a lot more comfortable (in the long run).

Discipline and work ethic have to fulfill you. They have to serve a higher purpose.
