For decades, I unthinkingly accepted the premise that fulfillment was achieved through intellect and action. Then I noticed quantifiable success didn’t guarantee fulfillment, within myself or even among the wildly successful. Then I noticed if my focus was on being present and empty, I wouldn’t stay that way–well-being inevitably rushed in, for no external reason whatsoever. So now, that’s what I focus on.

I still have goals and activities and pursuits, but I’ve come to realize that my focus is paramount. As far as the actual source of fulfillment, you could give it any number of names. I just prefer to trust that it’s there.

  3. Action seems to help me the most. It depends on the action being performed. Helping others is always a good one. It helps me get out of myself and into the present.

    Good work.

Hmm, dear, this speaks to me. My watchwords are simple:

    1. My happiness comes firstโ€”and that happiness comes from seeing others happy.
    2. Itโ€™s better to laugh than cry.
    3. I donโ€™t keep friends, I keep brothers and sistersโ€”because true family looks out for each other.
    Let me just stop here.

    1. Your watchwords resonate with the understanding that we’re all connected by something deeper and benevolent, and that we may all indeed be that something at our core. I wish you the best!

  11. Interesting post. Good work. Do you use mantras for focus and clarity? Would you consider yourself a Buddhist? What branch of Buddhism?
I am trying to learn more and more about Buddhism and Buddhist teachings every day.

    1. I wouldn’t consider myself a Buddhist. Just someone who likes to borrow from any form of mysticism

  15. You know Saint Paul said that before he speaks he has to empty himself of intellect. I’m not saying everybody should be Saint Paul but for some reason you’re using here reminded me of that act of humility. I’m a little buzzed so I don’t know maybe I missed the point.

  16. We’re totally on the same page. I noticed that I feel happy when walking my dog and staying present in the moment, so I’ve decided to always stay present, as much as possible and not let thoughts of the past or the future distract me.
