Musings

In creative pursuits, the appearance/feel of simplicity is made possible through long, boring hours of mucking through complexity/imprecision.

  1. This applies to more than just creative pursuits! I play recreational hockey, and I’m not very good at it. Occasionally I’ll see a player who played at a professional or even semi-professional level skating. What looks easy for them is the result of years of playing, practice, physical conditioning, training, etc.

  2. I feel that this is particularly true for cooking… all you have to do is watch Gordon Ramsay yell at a chef for failing to make basic scrambled eggs.

  3. There’s no getting around those ten thousand hours. Of course, if after all the hours of complicated, one hasn’t reached simplicity, don’t quit your day job.
