I find that ignorance is a result of assuming I know anything. And cowardice is a result of using that as an excuse not to act.

That…is kinda confusing. Ignorance might come from assuming we know everything..but we all know something.

I’d say we suspect. After all, when you get down to the core of religions, philosophies, even science, no one knows for sure. Quantum physics—our most reliable model thus far—has accounted for less than 10% of the matter/energy in the universe, and the questions of whether other universes exist, as well as the question of whether our life is a simulation…those have yet to be answered.

There is a third and often overlooked part of that equation, and that is knowing when discretion is indeed the better part of valor. Not every activity requires an equal and opposite reaction, particularly in situations involving people. Because when people are involved the rules of physics do not apply.

Indeed. And that is an art, for the information we have can only guide us through those situations; people are still trying to figure out people.

So if that is the case, what would the opposite of ignorance be? Would admitting to NOT knowing everything truly hurt your character?

IMHO the opposite would be saying yeah, science/religion/philosophy…the best any of those can do is an educated guess. That being the case, I’ll take that guess, experiment, and find out what works for me. Thus leading to a different (and appropriate) result for each individual.
History will prove that even the things we knew we didn’t. But we still have to act to improve everything.
And occasionally not acting improves something. Ignorance is defined as lack of knowledge. Admitting we have such a hole in understanding is good, and wise thought and there’s no real dichotomy in that.

As long as things are done in the spirit of brutal self-honesty, and the desire to do one’s best I think it’s all good in the end.

Assuming is something I’ve targeted to constantly work on for myself. THE THIRD AGREEMENT: Don’t Make Assumptions by Miguel Ruiz. Sometimes when we make assumptions we imagine things so much worse than what they really are. All the best.
