Musings

My idea of detachment is to be able to kick ass at life and walk away from the ensuing praise and glory.

It seems that most people’s definition, however, is to run away from the hard work of kicking ass at life.

  1. So, it’s about getting the job done and the sense of accomplishment from that versus the praise and pats on the back? I tend to agree. I won’t deny that getting some acknowledgement for the work and results is nice, but what I appreciate more is when folks come to me to get the next job done. That reinforces my own positive assessment of and sense of fulfillment from the work I’ve done more than any public praise.
That apparent lack of desire to be praised for a job well done might appear to be detachment, but…

    1. That’s definitely the ultimate compliment, but when faced with someone who feels threatened by your competence, it’s the ultimate revenge to not lash out at them, and instantly be appreciated by someone else for your skills.

  2. Totally off topic. Finished volume 3 over lunch. Review to follow in a day or so.

    1. Thanks much, man! I hope Volume 3 was more enjoyable. I got to throw in the philosophy and more fantastical set pieces I’d envisioned in the beginning of the series.

      1. Changing the POV from just Atriya to both him and Verus threw me for a loop, I’ll have to admit. Bandwidth’s tight right now because of my day job plus taking a fiction writing class, but I’ll get to the review as soon as I can. Cheers.

  3. Or not caring if there is no praise or glory to walk away from? A lot of people “kick ass” at things which benefit the world greatly but remain near invisible in terms of public recognition.

    1. I’d say that’s a valid way to phrase it as well.

  4. Iโ€™m a huge fan of Stoic philosophy, and one central teaching is to cultivate non-attachment to things, and even people.

Iโ€™m always happiest when I can express gratitude and yet not have posses something.

Great thoughts! Keep up the good writing and thinking!

    1. Thanks Nicholas! I get my ideas from the shower and red lights, so as long as I keep bathing and driving, I’ll keep writing, lol!
