Tradition/ritual/etiquette/etc are all important; they provide stability, as well as an idea of where to go.  But at a certain point they can easily poison us, co-opting our critical thinking/assessment with empty platitudes and the desire for the familiar.  They can shackle us to a stale beginning, preventing us from ever finishing and moving into a FRESH beginning.

To navigate these uncertain waters, I focus on effective strategy bounded by my personal ethics, which I assess and reinforce by examining myself in the harshest light I can muster.

    It’s a delicate balance, and whether tradition is structuring or stifling can be in the (metaphorical) eye of the beholder.

      Indeed. That’s why I prize the brutal self-honesty and evidence-based assessment. I feel like it’s a good way to navigate ambiguity.

    I’ve never been a naval gazer cause it’s not my nature and I don’t have time for all that. I got stuff to do. From my perspective ethics can’t be taught. People are mainly born with a sense of right and wrong. Some more than others. Some are just predators. You get what you get. I think you have to follow your nature and use it for good. So that was a lot of words to say I agree with what you wrote. Shake off the shackles and go where you know you’re meant to be. Cheers

      I’m not sure; there’s some interesting research into psychedelics that’s bringing up some fascinating possibilities concerning rehabilitation and shifting of perspective. But maybe, I don’t know. I agree with you too, I guess, haha! In either case, it’s good to know oneself and do the best we can. 🙂

    Traditions can be a hindrence. But you know what’s worse? When “progress” is emphasized above all else, and when people think something needs to be fixed, when it was fine the way it was.

      I don’t know if that’s worse, but I think it can be just as bad. I think the way to navigate that stuff is being as honest as possible with oneself to know the intent, and then being strict with evidence-based assessment.
