Becoming vicious and cruel is sometimes necessary—for protection against those who act that way—but being able to dial it down is also necessary to avoid becoming stuck in that state.

    You know, I’ve been thinking this refrain the past couple of days. That might well be because I’m writing a paper on the autodefensas (vigilantes) in Mexico, and how they could potentially replace the central state as the primary provider of security and/or signal enthusiasm for constitutionalism…
    I got off topic. Whoops.

      Nah you’re just thinking like a good writer! There is never such a thing as “off-topic.” You’re seeing the threads that run through everything; the challenge is how to translate to an audience without losing ’em!
