On my creative process…

Ever since I saw the first Matrix, I became a believer in what I call an “escalation of action.” When I first saw Neo in the dojo scene, I was like “Holy shit!” Then, when I saw him in the lobby shootout, I was like, “HOLY SHIT!” As he faced off one on one against Agent Smith, I damn near leapt up and started hooting like an ape. Yeah, they fumbled the ball in later movies, but that first Matrix…god DAMN it was good.

When I think about how to structure escalation of action, I think about what makes a character’s expression of violence both thrilling and personal. Then, as they evolve, how their subsequent expressions can be even more badass. Sure, I’ll put in symbolism and themes and societal commentary, but my teenage self gets first dibs on my stories. At the end of the day, my priority is making him say “Holy SHIT!” with increasing volume and clenched-fist excitement–the kind that makes you stay up long past midnight, thoughts racing, obsessing over how you can channel an equally joyful and exhilarating moment onto the page or the screen.

  1. Good insight into your process. My stories have less physical action than yours, but I recognize what you’re saying. My own checkpoint is two-fold.

Have I helped the reader understand my characters better, and have I avoided anything that will throw the reader out of the story.

Thanks for sharing how you work.

  2. Hello! I am an artist who loves to create beautiful things, and I also enjoy making music. In addition to that, I am a proud pet parent, which means I take care of my furry friends at home. For many years, I have been a big fan of Asian culture. This includes enjoying different forms of entertainment like manga, which are Japanese comic books, and anime, which are animated shows from Japan. I also really like K-drama, which are popular TV dramas from South Korea, and K-pop, which is the exciting pop music that comes from there too.

One of my favorite ways to relax is by watching movies at home. I find it very enjoyable to settle down with a cozy blanket and a great film. To make the experience even better, I love to have a delicious popcorn combo by my side. There’s something special about the taste of popcorn while watching a movie. Plus, I make sure to silence my phone so I can focus completely on the film without any distractions. This way, I can really enjoy the story and the characters.

    Enjoy your day.

  6. I agree with you about the Matrix and my own personal responses were much the same. They nailed it with that movie. And now that you’ve mentioned it, I believe you’ve nailed it as well in Echo. The escalation and the reader’s response. Perfect.

  7. I like action movies but sometimes there is too much action. After so much it has a diminishing affect on me.

Oh I love this! You are absolutely right. This is a big component of narrative drive, and it can be done in quieter stories, too. Thanks for reminding me how important it is!

    1. Yeah, absolutely! Everyone remembers the monologue in To Kill a Mockingbird, A Few Good Men, and there’s plenty of one-liners that captivate the spirit!

  14. I love “escalation of action”! And I know exactly what you mean by the first Matrix – it’s almost a way to deal with daily and out of the blue shit! Very glad your teenage self still gets to have first dibs in your writing… I’m the opposite – my teenage self was very prim and proper!
