Many think themselves free of addiction, thinking that the only detrimental addictions are the illegal ones. They qualify this by touting that they can still work at a job, go to school, or “at least” they are better off than their peers. Is this enough, though? In my mind it is not. While addiction need not be conquered to the point where I’m engaging in ego-stroking feats of endurance, it DOES need to be conquered to the point where I can engage in deep, soul-fulfilling activities every single day. It needs to be conquered to the point where at the end of each day, I can look at myself in the mirror and say, “Good job. Let’s shoot for the moon tomorrow as well.”
THAT’s what I’m aiming for.
Very True! How many of us are addicted to food, pleasure, sex, entertainment, money or any other common daily temptations. Most of these are good in and of themselves but when abused can lead to both physical, social and mental problems. Thanks for the introspect

No problem! While binge-watching is a laughable one, I’ve seen it pretty much derail ALL of my friends from their projects! It gets sad as the months, then years, go by.

it all starts so small and innocent and shortly whatever it is “controls us” and separates us from one another

Of course there are alcoholics. But I found I was addicted to sugar. I actually had withdrawals when I went off it. There are more types of addiction than Heinz has pickles. I applaud your goal of not just living, but living meaningfully.

I was too! That’s a horrible two weeks! Now I stay away from it unless it’s friday night or saturday. I’ve actually heard that it’s more addictive than cocaine or heroin, can’t remember which

I’ve heard that too. I think an addiction is anything you know harms you or your relationships in some way but you can’t or won’t give it up.

iI an addiction is bad for you, isn’t it illegal? For your soul or body or whatever? And what makes it an addiction? Just a little bit is often too much.

IMHO an addiction is whatever keeps you from doing what you want simply because you do it compulsively. I know someone who’s addicted to video games and he only enjoys a fraction of the time he spends playing, and then he beats himself up when he’s not.

I wish I had read the post earlier this morning. Instead, I lost a few hours to my Netflix addiction. Is everything that makes you feel comfortably bad for you, do you think?

No not at all! I think the world is here for us to enjoy, but I think that if we are addicted to the point where we can’t enjoy it in the fashion we want, THAT’s bad. My buddy actually enjoys video games more when he breaks it up into intervals that are interspersed with productive stuff, but he can’t sustain it; he usually plays in like these giant twelve hour blocks. THAT’s bad. He doesn’t even enjoy himself after an hour or two.

Interesting viewpoint on addiction. Addiction is an ongoing disease that you have to constantly work on.
