We’ve seen the insanely skilled fail to get all they deserve as well as the opposite; the obviously incompetent rise to great heights.  Skill and luck are influential, of that we all agree.

Here’s the thing:  I can’t prove it, but I can’t shake the hunch that after a certain point, it isn’t skill or luck that decides the outcome, but some hidden psychic or magical action.  In terms of reality, a multilayered decision to just BE something rather than chase after it.
