Unlike the majority of humans, the dogs I’ve been privileged to know love their friends unconditionally.  They offer up their beloved food or worldly possessions (prized playthings and blankets) and even their life if they think it’s needed.  They take the greatest joys in the simplest pleasures.  I have never understood why “dog/mongrel/cur” has been used as an insult.  If anything it should be a compliment.

Now that I think on it, the best, most admirable people I have known come closest to acting like dogs.

    It’s to do with their pack mentality, not human feelings. They can turn if they think their status in the pack is under threat.

      There’s truth to that but I think there’s also something to their domestication; they don’t function purely as wild animals anymore. I was watching a fascinating documentary on foxes bred together when they were judged as behaving kindly-their offspring actually physically changed to look more doglike. But I have also seen stories of dogs rescuing strangers getting mugged, or helping other animals out of the blue…Not all dogs are this way, but I think as a generalized group of souls they set a great example for us.

      That. Is. Awesome! Dogs don’t cause people to go homicidally apesh*t either, they tend to bring people together (unless they’re trained not to)
