Writers, how many of you, like me, saw Interstellar and were blown away-of course by the movie in general-but also by the thematic significance injected into gravity? Within the movie, gravity alternately plays into themes of constraint, freedom, and my favorite: universality, or commonality. To that end, I thought, “I’m creating a society where the elite live on the moon, and they need gravity to stay healthy long-term (astronauts become unhealthy from weak gravity). Why not create a symbol of imprisonment and binding that holds this society in place, literally and figuratively?” To that end I’ve imagined The Gravity Artifice, an insanely expensive artificial gravity engine that keeps the elites healthy and literally all their buildings and infrastructure from toppling. It’s in my Glossary of Concepts. Oh, also check out my entry on Echo itself. That should have been the first thing I put in there but I’m slow sometimes.
