“Rough/tough” is oft mythologized into dramatic strain or some iteration of the warrior-sage. The truly intimidating people are professional predators that show up well before dawn and help you bury a body in the middle of nowhere. Before expressing disgust, note this mentality is natural to us all, albeit buried in most cases, and has a beauty all its own.
