Due to the well-being that arises when my mind is empty, I’ve come to suspect that well-being is actually the default state–that it needn’t be justified or defended, and all that it requires is unobstructed passage to make itself felt.

Or I could exist in an internal state of paranoia and sacrifice. Always justifying, always guarding, always ready to oppress any potential oppressors, always waiting for the other shoe to drop. I’ve done that for a good portion of my life. At this point, I prefer to assume that my natural abidance is in a different state of existence.

I scream as we drop into the center of the Rancor pit.  “You don’t have a lightsaber!” I shout.  “What in THE FUCK?!?”

“Don’t worry,” Luke Skywalker assures me.  “I’ve done this before.”  He looks around and nods at some bones.  “Grab as many as you can.  We’ll stick em in its jaws and buy us some time.”

As I scramble toward a big-ass bone, the twenty-foot Rancor-gate starts creaking upward.  Jabba leans over the side and bellows, “HO HO HO!  NOW YOU’RE FUCKED!”

I brace for a tussle with a big-ass monster, but much to my surprise, it’s a dude stirring a pot of bubbling stew.

“Steven Seagal?”  Luke lowers his bone and straightens up in puzzlement.  “What are YOU doing here?”

Seagal nods at the pot.  “Used condom stew.  Don’t worry, I only came in them once.  They’re also lambskin.  For protein, you know?”  He loads a load (pardon the pun) onto his spoon.

Luke’s eyes widen in horror.  “Please.  DON’T—”

Seagal flicks the spoon, pitching a condom right at Luke’s face. “Spkew.”  It flies through the air and splats right on his mug.

“OH GOD!” the Jedi hollers, clutching the air with shaking fingers.  “HIS SPERM IS EVEN GROSSER THAN HIS VIBE!”  Skin melts off Luke’s skull, revealing a hideous assembly of sinew and bone.  He collapses on the deck, twitching and jerking in postmortem spasms. 

“Now you.”  Seagal zeroes in on me and re-cocks the spoon. 

Fuck it.  No options left.  So I open my eReader to a Kent Wayne novel, activating its mind-bending reality distortion powers.  Magic flash.

My wiener uncoils from my thigh, bursts from my pants, and expands a dozen yards in less than a second.  Steven manages a panicked yelp before it shloops onto his head, encompassing his skull in a veiny sheath that resembles a fleshy old-school diving helmet.  An instant later, it secretes nasty-ass smegma from within its folds.

“NO, PLEASE!!!”  He starts shaking and jiggling like he’s been hit by nerve gas.  “HRRRGHLLLHGHHP!!!”  After a couple of seconds, he sags in place and his soul leaves his body.

Whew!  That was a close one!  That’s what you get, fucker, for trynna splatter me with your gross-ass spooge!

Kent Wayne wins again!  HEH heh heh!

As time passes, I’ve seen “bad” things become good, and “good” things become bad. My takeaway is that I needn’t rush to condemn or praise, that I can focus more on enjoying the moment instead of obsessing over the score. From what I’ve seen of fulfillment, it doesn’t seem to be wedded to a checklist approach where on-paper accomplishments are all that matter. For me, it seems to reside in the spaces between milestones, and the openness to improvise along the way.

That’s just me, though. I have nothing against folks who restrict their enjoyment to rare and fleeting slivers of time, where they’ve managed to cobble together a set of outward conditions.

Superman insistently pats my cheek.  “Wake up, buddy—hey!  Nice underwear!  Little tight, though…I can see the veins on your root and your shaft.  Man, this is cool, I can measure your heartrate by tracking the in-and-out bulge!  What’re you, like 50 beats per minute?  You’re pretty shredded—definitely got an athlete’s BPM.”

“Huh?  Whazzuh?”  I blink and squint, forcing my surroundings into hazy focus.  We’re in a dingy warehouse, lit by a couple of harsh naked bulbs.  My hands are tied behind my back, securing me to a rusted, floor-to-ceiling pole.  “What the—” My eyes widen in fury.  “LET ME GO!”

He throws his head back and laughs.  “You think you can fuck my mom, then doo-bee-doo-bee-doo your way through your he-slut existence?”

“I’m a professional Man Whore!  I didn’t know who she was, she came to ME!”  I strain against my zipties.  No luck.

“We’re gonna have fun, you and me.”  His eyes glow red.  “Gonna heat-vision your frenulum, for starters.  Gotta hold back, though…Bruce wants a piece of you too.  Ever since you threesomed with Selina and Wonder Woman—”

“They paid me!” I sputter.  “None of you capes are packing any goddamn meat!  Jesus Christ, when you’re in skintight undies and your crotch is damn near Ken doll-smooth—”

He holds up a hand.  “Enough.  You’re cutting into our torture time.  Need to get some juicy screams outta you before I call up Bruce and let him get his.”

Fuck it.  No options left.  So I wiggle like a madman, bringing my pocket close enough to my hand to where I can snatch my eReader out of my pocket, then open its display to a Kent Wayne novel and activate its mind-bending reality distortion powers.  Magic flash.

Lois steps out of an interdimensional portal and puts her hands on her hips.  “Let the Man Whore go.”

Superman responds with a smirk and a chuckle.  “What are you gonna do, Lois?  You know you don’t have a chance in…”  The color drains from his face.  “What the…”  He drops to his knees and clutches his chest.  His cheeks quiver, sweat beads on his temples.  “Kryptonite.”

She lifts up her skirt, revealing a giant emerald penis.  “Made it into a strap-on.”

“Lois,” he manages.  “Don’t…”

“Small-penised psycho.  You think you can torture my favorite fucking Man Whore?  Get ready to reap the green-cocked whirlwind.”  She starts walking toward him.  “First thing I want is a big hawk tuah.  Put your heart into it, or God knows where I’ll put this throbbing jade wiener.”  She throws me a wink and mimes a Call Me with her thumb and pinkie. 

As I get up and flee the nasty-ass warehouse, I can’t help grinning like the cat that got the cream.  That’s what you get for trying to heat-vision my frenulum!
