Musings

I’ve often wondered if I had to struggle and toil in order to see that my true potential only comes forth when I inwardly focus on ease and freedom (regardless of how hard I may be outwardly struggling).

In the past I’ve said yes–I had to go through that pain in order to grow–but that feeds into a religious model of thought:  that I must sacrifice and toil to earn a reward.

After observing exceptions to this “rule,” and seeing the awesome results when I myself became an exception to it, I have concluded no–you don’t need to crush yourself in order to be rewarded.

  1. I never bought into the “I hurt you because I love you” version of God/Fate. I’m reasonably certain suffering is something we made. We’re so weird.

  2. This is something that many circles call the “Starving Artist” stereotype. Basically, the “Starving Artist” stereotype assumes that “true” art comes from pain. So, to be a “true” artist, you must suffer. It is, therefore, okay to not value artists, not to pay them enough, or not to acknowledge that art plays an important role in society. It is a capitalistic justification for why people can get away with treating those that don’t benefit them monetarily terribly. It is not, was never, and will never be true. Suffering is suffering. It shouldn’t happen. Period.
