There’s a point during the creative process where my belief in what I’m doing overrides any outside objections, no matter how logical or powerful they may be.
To reach this point, I have to tear my material apart and do my best to fit everything into a smooth-flowing narrative. Once the foundation has been firmly laid, I have to FEEL for the parts that are wrong, and edit them by feel alone. During that phase, there’s really no explanation for the choices I make, other than it rings true in my heart.
Maybe that’s where it can become transcendent.

I don’t tear my stuff up, but I physically cut it up with scissors – hard copy held on to white board with little magnets, then cut and move paragraphs…

I don’t think I would have the patience for that. But then the long stuff I write is for work, so there isn’t usually motivation for more than one or two drafts.

I think I go through about 30 reads/revisions before I end up liking it enough to publish.

You need Scrivener. I’m not a shill but it’s te only thing I’ve found that will line it on the edge of the screen, down to scene, down to paragraph if you want. Makes it easy to spot the holes and moviing things is asz easy as moving them. Beats hell outta scissors.

I’ll check it out, thanks. I do like the physical aspect of moving things around with my hands. But with collaborations in the time of COVID I probably do need a digital way of doing it.

Depends on what you’re doing. Art for $ or creative for the sake of it. If it’s all yours, you’re the boss. In those cases, I am often reminded of the old bit about the man who is own attorney has a fool for a client. Trust your concept, edit your execution. Because if there were no noise on the line to the muse who would need skill?
