Often, a price is implicit in the hero’s journey.  A popular assumption is that someone pays for their reward with suffering and toil.  But I’ve met plenty of folks who are naturally talented or naturally lucky; they don’t grind themselves down to achieve greatness.

Maybe the sacrifice isn’t in suffering and toil.  Maybe the sacrifice can be in someone’s perception—specifically of how earth-shattering and difficult a task has to be.  If we can let go of that belief, perhaps we can give up much of the fight, both on an internal and external level.

  1. The journey is the thing, so the price of the ticket is constantly changing. I am reminded of the line from “Jeremiah Johnson”

    You’ve come far pilgrim.

    Feels like far.

    Were it worth the trouble?

    What trouble?

  2. A journey always has a price. If nothing else, you change some of your beliefs, shift priorities in your values along the way. But whether that includes suffering, I think, often is a matter of one’s own worldview. Some may need the suffering to call it a worthwhile journey. Others are there to explore and accept all as it comes. And many other variations.
