Musings

I’m not sure if we have basic human rights, but I like to act as if we do.

The thing is, I believe the enactment of these rights depends on being competent, in case anyone who is also competent happens to disagree, and tries to do away with my idea of basic rights.

So even as I engage in the luxury of theory and the privilege of debate, I try to ensure that I’m tending to the weeds in my own garden, so I have some crops to bring to the table.

  1. The idea that some rights were fundamental / basic / came from God or nature was an a keypart of the writings of 18th century philosophers. It’s also why the first ten amendments to the US Constitution are the only part that can’t be changed or revoked. Something few people understand nowadays is that if a right comes from government vs being a natural right, then government has the ability to take away the right also.

You were spot on that rights also come with responsibilities to use them properly also. THAT is something that almost nobody seems to understand nowadays.
