If one is fortunate and strong enough to survive the experience, I believe that the death of all hope can be an unexpected segue into unprecedented greatness.

An adverse event that destroys expectations for the future. I think this can also destroy obsolete preconceptions and induce positive reinvention of one’s self.

Oh; does that mean “hope” is an individual vs. universal expectation, not “abandon all hope ye who enter here?” Most people have collections of hope in various parts of life. They may discover some hopes will not be fulfilled, which is both a disappointment and a relief of that burden.

Yes, individual. I think hope can be useful, but in the long run, it becomes at odds with enjoying the journey rather than constantly putting the burden of enjoyment on the destination. I suspect this is the meaning behind hope being in Pandora’s box with the rest of the evils.

I used to listen to “something I can never have” over and over, cos I heard it at a strip club and loved it, LOL!

Yeah, his stuff was popular with peelers, that’s for sure. “Closer” was inescapable back in my day.

With nothing left to lose, even the smallest of gains can be appreciated. And that can even include not gaining anything – simply not losing anymore.
